Using VirtualBox, you can create and run guest operating systems (“virtual machines”) such as Linux and Windows under a host operating system. There are two ways of installing VirtualBox: from pre-compiled binaries and the sources code.

This tutorial shows you how to set up VirtualBox 5 from the pre-compiled binaries.

From the version 2.0 VirtualBox supports 32 and 64bit host and guest operating systems (if you want to install 64bit guests your processor must support hardware virtualization and, of course, the host operating system must be 64bit as well).

Step 1: Open up a Terminal.

Step 2: Edit /etc/apt/sources.list file.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Step 3: Add the following line to that file.

### LinuxMint 18 ###

deb xenial contrib

### LinuxMint 17 ###

deb trusty contrib
Step 4: Import the Public key of the Oracle VirtualBox repository to your system.

### LinuxMint 18 ###

wget -q -O- | sudo apt-key add -

### LinuxMint 17 ###

wget -q -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Step 5: Update the package database.

sudo apt-get update
Step 6: Install the VirtualBox 5.2. Command as follows.

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-5.2
Note: dkms package ensures that the VirtualBox host kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, and vboxnetadp are correctly updated if the Linux kernel version changes during the next apt-get upgrade.

sudo apt-get install dkms
Step 7: Start VirtualBox (Menu—> Administration > Oracle VM VirtualBox) – on Cinnamon desktop.

Step 8: On the first start, it will prompt you to accept the license agreement; Just Accept License Agreement.

Linux Mint 17 - VirtualBox 4.3
Linux Mint 17 – VirtualBox 4.3
Next, you will get the Home screen of the Oracle VirtualBox Manager; here you can manage the Virtual Machines.
